I will start this topic with appreciating Netflix Original, American teen drama 13 Reasons Why. Its fourth and final season just dropped on June 3rd, 2020 and left many of the fans weeping with its emotional ending. Why am I discussing this TV show? What this has to do with this topic?
Many of you who had already watched this show have grasped the context. This show starts with the suicide tapes of the high-school girl Hannah Baker. In her suicide audio tapes, she speaks about all the reasons and people who led her to her unfortunate end.
I would request every one of you to take care of people around you. Keep checking on them. The world is so unexpected and cruel. If you feel uncomfortable, talk to a friend or your family member or anyone who you trust. Cut out toxic people from your life. Remember, inner peace is very important. You matter. All people matter. Lots of love to all of you.

From that day, I comprehended the importance of mental health. That was day when I soon realised that depression is real. It can happen to anyone regardless of their status, routines, and lifestyles. I realised that everyone had mental health issues at some point which were unfortunately overlooked by everyone because our society doesn’t take this serious.

There are many times when I feel depressed. Sometimes, I feel that the things aren’t going in a straight path and my life is like a car on a bumpy road somewhere in Karachi. Luckily, I was not helpless like Hannah. I had a friend, not a close one, but a good friend. He listened to me, didn’t judge me, and helped me pass through that stage. Not everybody is as lucky as me. Not everyone has good friends to listen to them and console them. Especially, in our society, when a person in depression is termed as ‘attention seeker’ and ‘dramaybaaz’.
Talking and listening is useful and necessary. I always repeat, sharing your problems with your best people reduces depression and makes you feel better. Many people advise that one, if a Muslim, should pray and share their problems with Allah. I agree to this divine advice but honestly speaking, not everybody can achieve peace through this. Mental health issues doesn’t happens to people with specific religion and faiths. Listen to the person who is depressed and wants a shoulder to cry on. Let them vent out a little. It’s a natural process of feeling better.
I belong to the school of thought that believes that ‘suicide is a murder’ because life is such a beautiful blessing that no one wants to lose. Tell me why young beautiful teenagers would want to end their lives when they have so many beautiful memories to make and goals to achieve. This is because the world is so fast and cruel that in the race of becoming perfect and in the mid of all this peer pressure telling us what is right and what is wrong; what is acceptable and what is rejected, the person eventually don’t focus on their mental health and lose their inner peace.
