We all take decisions in our lives daily. Each second, a decision is took on the Earth by humans, animals, governments, and God. The decision we take reflects our thinking capability and affects our life accordingly. Just like everyone, I also take decisions every now and then so that I can shape my life according to the best choices possible. I have taken decisions that proved beneficial for me and some proved useless for me but beneficial for others. Anyways, among those decisions, there is one I took five years ago and believe me I am very proud of that decision.
It was the year 2015. I was 16 years old in my first year at a High School in Karachi. Teenagers are always rebellious. They want to see the quick change and hence they develop conscience about the current affairs around them. As a teenager, I had those traits. I lived in Karachi and I have always seen it in a state of chaos and destruction. I wondered why nobody comes forward to change the sad state of affairs of the city.
Actually, beautiful cities turn me on. Yes, cities which have clean streets, well planned areas, footpaths, public spaces, parks, and a sound environment. Due to the incapability of the governments, Karachi lost these qualities. I took it upon myself to change my city but how could I? How can a 16 year old boy transform the city which is destroyed and overlooked for decades? Today, many people ask this question that how they can change their city alone. I had no time to debate so I took the landmark decision of my life which provided me satisfaction and relief every time I act upon it.
I pledged “From today onward, I will throw every wrapper and leftover waste in the nearest dustbin. If there is no dustbin nearby, I will keep the wrapper in my pocket and will dispose the wrapper as soon I find the dustbin. Under no circumstances, I will throw the wrapper on ground.” Initially, it felt difficult to change the habit. It was like when a smoker tries to quit smoking. Gradually, it became easy because I was concrete on my resolution. I wanted to play my part to keep my city clean. Today, I throw even a small wrapper such as toffee wrapper in the dustbin. In my opinion, it is just a small step towards accomplishing my responsibility as a citizen. I have to do much more and so, I pray to God to keep me firm on my resolve.
I didn’t keep this decision to myself but I orated this to the people in my close circles such as friends and family. At first, it was very difficult to convince them, but bit by bit, they followed my advice. Some of my friends used to throw wrappers on the ground despite my requests for the sake of bantering me but slowly after my repetitive counselling, they have agreed to play their part as a responsible citizen.
Dear readers, Remember one thing. Nobody is coming from the skies to mend your surroundings. You are in majority and hence, you have to come forward. To bring our city in a stable state without its citizen participating is a mere dream. I request you to take small steps towards being a good citizen. Trust me you’ll feel satisfied and compensated.
